    Rigorous Testing and Certification

Our Hymotion modules have been designed and tested to meet all relevant Federal safety and emissions standards, including NHTSA and FMVSS vehicle safety standards. Hymotion has fully crash tested the modules to ensure safety, going beyond the testing requirements for after market products.

    Driving your plug-in hybrid

According to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), half of the cars in the U.S. are driven just 25 miles a day or less. Hymotion's L5 Plug-in Conversion Modules enable your vehicle to achieve outstanding fuel economy by electrically supplementing the hybrid drive train for up to 40 miles. When the Hymotion L5 module is fully depleted, your vehicle will function as a standard hybrid until you recharge.

    Recharging

When you get home, plug your car into your house using an extension cord and a standard 120V outlet. Your L5 module will be fully charged when you are ready to go in the morning. Simply unplug your car and start your day!

    Environmental Impact

A Hymotion plug-in charged from grid electricity of the average national blend results in a 70% or greater reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a traditional gas-powered vehicle. If the L5 battery is charged from electricity generated entirely by coal-fired power plants, there is still a net CO2 emissions reduction of at least 50%.

As our national blend of electricity generation progresses towards greener generation sources, such as solar and wind, the environmental benefits of Hymotion plug-in hybrids will continue to grow. The L5 battery is also environmentally friendly and recyclable, containing no heavy metals or toxic chemicals.

    Petroleum reduction

Hymotion plug-in hybrid vehicles reduce oil consumption by up to 70% over conventional, gas powered vehicles. Upgrading to a Hymotion plug-in hybrid will result in a significant reduction in petroleum consumption on an individual vehicle basis. With widespread adoption, Hymotion plug-in hybrids present the potential to reduce national oil consumption while using today’s existing infrastructure – the grid.

The Set America Free coalition, an advocacy group focused on energy independence and GHG reduction points out that "if all cars on the road are hybrids and half are plug-in hybrid vehicles, U.S. oil imports would drop by 8 million barrels per day."

    National Security

Widespread adoption of Hymotion plug-in hybrid technology can help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Hymotion plug-in hybrids enable us to reduce our consumption of foreign-sourced petroleum and allow us to rely more on electricity generated at home using our current infrastructure.

Plug-in hybrid technology can also help us take advantage of off-peak electricity generation by charging vehicles overnight when electricity demand is low. Moving towards a more electric vehicle platform allows us to work towards vehicle-to-grid technologies and a more redundant and fault tolerant grid.

    A More Electrified hybrid

Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Modules increase the electric capability of the Prius hybrid platform by supplementing the vehicle's factory battery. The Hymotion module's greater stored energy capacity allows the Prius to use electric drive more often and for longer distances, engaging the gas engine less frequently and resulting in large fuel efficiency gains over the stock Toyota Prius.

A123's Hymotion modules are based on Nanophosphate™ lithium ion batteries that deliver higher levels of power, safety, and life than conventional lithium ion batteries.

    Rechargeable energy

The Hymotion L5 Plug-in Conversion Module is a rechargeable Nanophosphate™ lithium ion battery that uses regular 120V grid power to recharge, providing the user with ~5kWh of rechargeable energy storage at full capacity.

Through the increased use of electric drive, the Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Module enables the Prius to achieve upto 100+MPG  for 30-40 miles, dependent upon driving conditions. Once the L5 module is depleted, the vehicle reverts to the normal drive cycle of a stock Toyota Prius.

Hymotion plug-in hybrids save more energy and produce less pollution than standard hybrids on the road today.

    Drive longer / Drive Better

The L5 module provides more frequent periods of all-electric driving during your commute, but the L5 module does not block the gas engine from engaging while the pack has charge. When the Prius needs power, either dictated by your right foot, or by driving conditions like hills, the gas engine will engage to supply that power.

In that sense, complete electric driving is limited by the current configuration of the Toyota Prius. But that does not keep you from enjoying fuel economy of up to 100 mpg for 30-40 miles! EPA Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) Test Results Show 150+ MPG with L5 PCM

To validate the performance of the Hymotion™ L5 PCM, Hymotion conducted testing at national labs like Argonne National Labs (ANL), Idaho National Labs (INL) and Environment Canada. Shown in the plot are urban drive cycles which are repeated to gauge fuel economy. What is important in this chart are not only the fuel economy numbers, which show greater than 150 mpg while the L5 has charge; but also the gray lines showing gasoline engine speed. Based on the performance data shown in this plot, the EPA mileage sticker for this vehicle would state 150 mpg for city driving conditions. Also, you can see the vast difference in the amount of time the engine is on (refer to gray line showing engine speed) between the first five cycles while the L5 is in operation and the final cycle when the L5 is depleted, highlighting the benefit of the L5 PCM.

    Serious about safety

We take safety very seriously, and the system meets strict automotive standards.Hymotion™ Plug-in Conversion Modules have been crash tested in accordance with National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulations. Safety is addressed both at the individual cell level and at the system level. At the cell level, Hymotion conducts a variety of safety tests to ensure that cells made with Nanophosphate™ technology have excellent abuse tolerance. Please visit the A123Systems' primary website for detailed safety information: http://www.a123systems.com/#/technology/safety/

At the system level, the L5 module contains a Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the voltage of each cell in the pack as well as the temperature of the individual battery modules. This information is fed into the electronics controller which automatically terminates charge or discharge in the event that any safety limits are exceeded.

Further, Hymotion's kit incorporates crash sensors designed to disconnect the pack in the case of an accident. Our Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Modules are designed to withstand crashes (as can be seen in the videos to the right), abusive conditions, extreme temperatures, and all vehicle transport conditions. Other considerations like a driving lockout when the car is plugged in to prevent you from driving away while plugged in; as well as high voltage service disconnects are integral to overall system safety.

    A123SYSTEMS Battery manufacturing

A123Systems' Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Modules are manufactured using highly abuse tolerant Nanophosphate™ lithium ion technology. Hymotion has successfully demonstrated with test data that the technology is safe according to UL standards when overcharged, over discharged and subjected to mechanical abuse. Our Hymotion modules have been crash-tested and certified to meet applicable federal safety standards.
