What to do Before

• Make sure vehicle is admissible and can be modified to Canadian requirements by checking Transport Canada’s “List of Vehicles Admissible from the U.S.”
• Check for typical modification requirements
• Contact original manufacturer or authorized dealer of vehicle to obtain any Recall Clearance Letters
• Obtain information from manufacturer or authorized dealer on costs for modifications
• Determine additional costs such as Duty and Taxes from the CBSA
• Make sure you have all required documentation: title, registration, sales receipts, statement of compliance label, and recall clearance letter
• Find out about provincial requirements such as emissions testing and safety inspections
• Arrange for insurance on the imported vehicle
  

What to do at the Border

• Present title documents, registration, and sales receipts
• Complete Vehicle Import Form - Form 1, CBSA will provide
• CBSA will confirm the vehicle meets the List of Vehicles Admissible from the U.S.
• Once confirmed, CBSA will collect Registrar of Imported Vehicles fee (RIV) of $195 CAN + GST (Goods and Services Tax)
• Payment for RIV, in-person at the CBSA, can ONLY be made using a major credit card
• CBSA cannot accept cash or check but a money order or check can be mailed to RIV Office, that can take up to 14 days for the check to clear
• Do not proceed with any modifications until you receive federal inspection form
• Federal inspection form will not be issued if file is unpaid
• Purchaser has 45 days to complete necessary modifications

What to do after entering Canada

• After payment and documentation has been received, an Inspection Form will be mailed with details on what modifications must be made to be in compliance
• Buyer is responsible for completing modifications within 45 days
• Keep records and receipts of parts and labor to present with the Inspection Form, Form 1, Form 2, and the recall clearance letter
• Upon passing Inspection, Form 1 will be stamped that you will have to present to provincial or territorial licensing authority
• Within 1 week, a Canadian certificate label will be mailed with instructions on where to put it on the vehicle
• If vehicle fails, buyer is responsible for additional charges for another inspection
• If vehicle cannot pass within 45 days, it will have to be exported back to the United States

Vehicle Exporting Regulations

• Must be the Person exporting the vehicle or a representing Agent employed by Purchaser
• Must be the Vehicle that is being exported
  

Vehicle Exporting Procedures

• All required documentation must be submitted 72 hours prior to export
• Documentation can only be processed at the actual Port of exportation
• At time of export, vehicle must be present with authenticated documentation for verification for the 72 hour requirement
• Vehicle must be accessible so the VIN can be verified
• Person who presents documentation may be required to present photo identification as proof of owner/purchaser
• If applicable, Agents who present documentation may be required to present photo identification

Exporting at Land Border crossings:

• Owner must provide 2 copies of each;Original Certificate Title or Certified Copy of Original
• Required Documentation must be submitted to Customs 72 hours prior to export
• Vehicle must be present at time of exportation
  

• Inspectors will review all documentation for compliance with regulations
• Special attention will be put on documents being either original or certified copy of Certificate of Title
• Certified copy should contain a seal from the issuing government agency (i.e. DMV) and have official’s signature, title, and date
• When inspector determines documents are complete, the documents will be stamped
• If documentation is not in compliance, then documents will be returned to exporter with a rejected notice or stamp issued as directed by port policy

Other Exporting Information

• If there is a recorded lien, DMV will not issue a certified copy
• Only documents issued by a State DMV will be accepted by Customs
• Notarized copies of any of the required documents will NOT be accepted
• Vehicles for export will only be processed Monday thru Friday during normal working hours of the Port policy, closed Federal holidays
• Used vehicle exports to Canada are exempt from the Shipper’s Export Declaration as required by Commerce regulations
